I always thought my first blog would be about me - to give you an idea of who I am and what I want to talk about. Maybe you fill you in on the fact that I bleed Orange and Blue and that I‘ve been a Jags season ticket holder since day one…but we’ll get to that later. A prominent sports figure, as usual, has opened his mouth and given me something much more interesting to talk about.
Michael Crabtree, the standout wide receiver from Texas Tech, is making his best case that Brady Quinn is the most underpaid player in the NFL. I realize that these may only be rumors started by his cousin but if there is any truth to the convoluted logic that you should be paid based on mock-draft positions, people like Brady Quinn should sue for back pay.
It was hard enough to swallow Eli Manning signing a more lucrative contract than Peyton. I grasp Reggie Bush (the number two pick) making more than Mario Williams a few years ago but to demand a pay raise above your draft position based solely on mock-drafts is utterly ridiculous.
I don’t think most people would argue that Al Davis made a mistake…but come on Mike…let’s have some sense here. If you elect to not sign a contract this year you will be, at best, a late first round draft pick next year, costing yourself millions. Don’t head down the same path as Mike Williams! You may remember him - the all-world wide receiver from USC that everyone had to have…the next position-changer in the NFL…who declared for the NFL draft, signed an agent, and then tried to go back to school. He ended up sitting out a year, just as you are proposing. I bet this blog is the last time you’ve heard his name or even though about him.
Ultimately it could be worse, you could have been drafted by Al, and be a Raider today making $23.5 million, or would that not have been enough either?
